Plattkofel, also known as the Sassopiatto in Italian or Plattkofel in German, is a mountain in the Dolomites, in South Tyrol, Italy. It has an elevation of 2,995 meters (or about 9,826 feet), making it one of the highest peaks in the area. The mountain is located in the western part of the Rosengarten group, a mountain range in the Dolomites.

The mountain is known for its distinctive flat-topped shape, which is unusual for a mountain of its size. Its name reflects this, as "Sassopiatto" translates to "Flat Rock" in Italian, while "Plattkofel" means the same in German.

Plattkofel is a popular destination for hiking and climbing. There are several routes to the summit, some of which are quite challenging and require mountaineering skills. The mountain also offers opportunities for winter sports such as ski touring and snowshoeing.

The area around Plattkofel boasts a rich variety of flora and fauna. It is home to a variety of alpine and subalpine plants, as well as numerous bird species.

Despite its rugged appearance and challenging ascents, Plattkofel is accessible and offers stunning views of the surrounding Dolomites, making it a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers. As part of the Dolomites, the area around Plattkofel, including the Rosengarten group, was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2009. This recognizes the area's unique beauty and the importance of preserving its natural and cultural heritage.
